What is a Standard?

A standard is an agreed, repeatable way of doing something. It is a reference document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used to ensure that material, products, processes and services are tailor-made for their purpose. Standards are voluntary which means that there is no automatic legal obligation to apply them.
